Sooners Sweep Major Big 12 Softball Awards

Oklahoma’s  softball team swept all the major individual awards handed out by the Big 12 Conference on Wednesday, May 13.

OU won all four individual awards, with Shelby Pendley named Big 12 Player of the Year, Paige Parker winning Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and also being the co-Freshman of Year, and Patty Gasso was the Big 12 Coach of the Year.

It’s the first time in the 20-year history of the league one school has won all four of those honors in the same season.

Pendley won her second Player of the Year honor after taking it in 2013.

She joins former Sooner Amber Flores as the only players to win it twice.

Pendley led the Big 12 in conference play in batting average, runs, home runs, total bases, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage.

Parker became the fourth freshman pitcher to win Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors.

Parker tied an NCAA record with four perfect games in one season, and led the Big 12 in earned run average at 1.45.

Gasso won the Coach of the Year award for the fourth year in a row and the eighth time in her career.

The All-Big 12 teams were also announced, with OU racking up 12 all-conference picks in all, the most of any school.

The All-Big 12 First Team featured Pendley, Parker, Lauren Chamberlain,  and Erin Miller of the Sooners.

On the second team were OU players Kady  Self, Georgia Casey, and Whitney Ellis.

Two Sooners made the Big 12 All-Defensive Team:  Ellis and freshman third baseman Kelsey Arnold.

Arnold was one of of three Sooners who made the Big 12 All-Freshman team, joining Parker and Nicole Pendley, who is  Shelby’s younger sister.

Oklahoma State had four all-conference honorees, with senior outfielder Shelby Davis named to the first team, and junior infielder Tiffany Mikkelson named second team.

Vanessa Shippy and Randee O’Donnell of the Cowgirls made the all-freshman team.
