NORMAN, Okla. – As the Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to clinch a spot in the College Football Playoffs, a head coach is sending a message to the team.
While OU was on its way to a blowout win over Kansas, quarterback Baker Mayfield stunned coaches when he made a crude gesture on the sidelines.
After throwing a three-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews to put OU up 28-3 in the third quarter, Mayfield twice grabbed his crotch and yelled obscenities at the Kansas bench, all caught on camera by ESPN.
After the 41-3 win, Mayfield issued an apology for his actions during the game.
“What I did today, tonight was unacceptable. I am a competitive player but what I did is unacceptable so I apologize. It’s disrespectful, it’s not the example I want to set, it’s not the legacy I want to leave at OU, so I truly do apologize,” Mayfield said.
On Monday afternoon, OU head coach Lincoln Riley announced that Mayfield would be punished for his actions.

Riley said that Mayfield will not be listed as a captain or start in Saturday’s game against West Virginia. However, he said Mayfield will likely play during the game.
