The Oklahoma City Thunder drafted two players in the 2014 NBA draft.
OKC took both Mitch McGary and Josh Heustis in the first round of the draft.
McGary was a two-year player from the University of Michigan.
In his freshman season, he helped lead the Wolverines to the national title game and raised this draft status as well.
In December of 2013, McGary injured and had surgery on his back, resulting in him playing just eight games this past season.
McGary says he plans to play on the Thunder’s summer league squad.
During the NCAA tournament and while he was still out with the injury, the 22-year-old tested positive for marijuana in a drug test.
Facing a possible one year suspension by the NCAA McGary decided to turn pro.
The Thunder took the Indiana native with the 21st overall pick in the NBA draft.
McGary will battle Thunder big men Kendrick Perkins, Serge Ibaka, Nick Collison, Steven Adams and Hasheem Thabeet for playing time in his rookie season.
Following the draft, Thunder General Manager, Sam Presti wasn’t sure how much the Michigan product would get to play yet and that the decision was up to Head Coach, Scott Brooks.
With their second pick in the first round the Thunder took Josh Heustis of Stanford University with the 29th overall pick.
The four-year college player isn’t the only professional athlete in his family.
Heustis’ biological brother, Christian Dean, plays for Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps.
Presti says he plans for Heustis to spend most of his time with the Thunder’s developmental team, the Tulsa 66ers.
