ANTLERS, Okla. – It has been just over two months since Jauquetta Trotter lost her daughters in a wreck with an alleged drunk driver.
“I had my eyes closed and my daughter said, ‘Mom, we’re fixing to get hit head on.’ And by the time I opened my eyes, I saw the lights and we were hit,” Trotter remembers.
Sadly, that was the last thing her daughter ever said to her.
Troopers said the family was hit by a Hummer driving on the wrong side of the road, driven by Shawn Jones.
Within the next minute, Trotter knew her life was changed forever.
“I knew she was dead as soon as I looked at her,” she said. “And then my other daughter was in the back seat and she just took a few breaths and that was it for her too.”
A few minutes later, Trotter remembers one of the men from the other vehicle yelling at her for being on the wrong side of the road.
“I said, ‘No, y’all were in the wrong lane and you just killed my daughter,” she told KXII.
29-year-old Becky Trotter and 34-year-old Brooke Trotter both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Shawn Jones on two counts of second-degree murder. Authorities believe Jones was drunk when he got behind the wheel.
Court records indicate that Jones was on a one-year suspended sentence for driving drunk. Investigators say Jones hit a firefighter and left the scene of the accident just over a year before the deadly crash.
