Woman in critical condition after husband attempts murder-suicide

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Police are investigating after a man allegedly shot his wife and then the turned the gun on himself.

“We’ve lived here three years and never a peep,” a neighbor, who didn’t want to share her name, told News 4.

But early Tuesday morning, there was more than just a peep on a normally peaceful street near NW 150th and MacArthur.

“There were a bunch of cars lining the street and I saw a police car,” the neighbor said.

Not just one, but a swarm of officers were parked outside a home where an argument between a husband and wife took a deadly turn.

“A family member who was present at the residence, heard them arguing in the bedroom, then heard shots,” MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, said.

Knight said that family member- the couple’s adult daughter, ran in the bedroom to check on her parents and made a horrific discovery.

“Found that the male had executed himself and tried to kill the female,” Knight said.

The victim, Louise Hayes, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The man, identified as Jeffrey Hayes, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Very sad situation, obviously. Tragic when one person takes their own life but even more so when they try to take the life of another,” Knight said.

Neighbors told News 4 the two seemed like a happy couple who mostly kept to themselves but were always friendly.

“Never anything like that has happened anywhere near where we live. So, this morning was sort of a shock,” the neighbor said. “Especially around the holidays. I know my family will have the other family in our prayers.”
