Four dead and dozens injured, one in custody after wreck during OSU homecoming parade in Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla.- A homecoming parade in Stillwater turned tragic after an incident that left at least 4 people dead and dozens injured.

An alleged drunk driver drove a car into the crowd who were watching the end of the homecoming parade.

Three people died in Stillwater at the scene of the incident and a 2-year-old child died at OU Medical Center after being transported.

Stillwater Police said the list of injured has grown to 44.

Stillwater Medical Center says they have treated victims who ranged in ages from 1 to 66.

Police say 25-year old Adacia Chambers was driving south on Main street and hit an unmanned police motorcycle and then plowed into the crowd gathered for the parade.

She was arrested for Driving Under the Influence at the scene and is in the City of Stillwater Jail.

School officials say she is not a student.

The Stillwater News Press reports Chambers worked part-time at a fast food restaurant near the scene and it was originally reported she may have been fired earlier on Saturday. Now the owner says she seemed fine when she left work.

Victims were airlifted from the scene to Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

Oklahoma State released this statement earlier.

OSU President Burns Hargis says the OSU family is devastated by this mornings events.

Oklahoma State University is devastated by today’s tragedy and extends its thoughts and prayers to the families of those who perished or were injured.

We are shocked and heartbroken by this horrible tragedy. The Oklahoma State University Homecoming parade is the most wholesome of events and to have it marred in such a way is incomprehensible.

We appreciate the rapid response and work of all emergency personnel. The OSU family will remember those affected by this tragedy.

On Sunday, Stillwater Mayor Gina Noble issued the following statement:

“Yesterday began as a celebration in Stillwater, Oklahoma. We were welcoming home thousands of loyal and true Oklahoma State University alumni and fans for America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration. As the Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade, I, along with my son Braxton, had the honor of being one of the first cars to lead the parade,” the statement reads. “We saw thousands of smiling faces and heard so many nice comments along the way. Everyone was quick to make the “Go Pokes – Pistols Firing” hand gestures. Everyone was kind. Everyone was happy. We were celebrating life in Stillwater. We were celebrating OSU. We were celebrating friendships and family and the Cowboy spirit.

“And then, the unthinkable happened.

“As the mayor, I saw the tragedy unfold, but I saw much more. I saw the faces and hearts and expertise and professionalism of our first responders: Stillwater Police Department, Stillwater Fire Department, City of Stillwater Emergency Management Agency SEMA, Oklahoma National Guard. and Oklahoma Highway Patrol. I am so proud of their work and know the tragedy would have been worse had they not been participating in and helping to manage the parade. These men and women were leaders. They were heroes yesterday. The doctors and nurses and staff at Stillwater Medical Center were heroes, too. I also witnessed remarkable leadership from Oklahoma State University and the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association. The city of Stillwater, Stillwater City Council and Oklahoma State University are working together. We are mourning together. We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. Our hearts are heavy. We are family. We are a team. We are STILLWATER STRONG.”
