SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WSMV) – Kristen Layne says the night of her junior prom was “the best night of her life.”
The 18-year-old wore a dress that made her feel like a princess to the prom at White House High School last year.
“I said, ‘That’s mine. That’s going to be mine,” Layne recalled when she spotted the dress.
She decided to sell her dress through a group on Facebook, but did not expect the backlash she would receive from her picture.
“I was trying to sell my prom dress, and these two men were just saying some very hateful things, I guess just telling me I was fat and that I wasn’t beautiful,” she said.
“I didn’t understand why people who didn’t even know her wanted to lash out at her,” said Jason Layne, Kristen’s father.
Within minutes, other Facebook users came to her defense.
“I don’t know how to accept the compliments from people who tell me that I’m beautiful because it doesn’t happen a lot,” she said.
She says she wanted to sell her old dress to get a new one for her senior prom this year.
She was originally asking $350 for the dress, but the community has already raised $400 for a new gown.
“I’m just so thankful, so thankful for the people out there,” she told WSMV.
