MOORE, Okla. — Fire crews rescued several people from a burning apartment building early Friday morning.
It happened around 6 a.m. Friday morning at the Nottingham apartments near I-35 and NW 27th.
“I woke up to a guy banging on my door saying it was an emergency to get out of your apartment, that the building is on fire,” Malinda Leasure told News 4. “It’s 6 in the morning. Where is the fire at? What could have started this fire?”
Those questions were floating through Leasure’s head while crews battled the flames. Turns out, the fire started in the building directly behind Leasure’s building.
“The fire started on the downstairs floor and we were able to stop it before it got up into the second story,” Deputy Chief Greg Herbster with the Moore Fire Department said.
Crews had to rescue several people on the second floor who were trapped.
“They were able to evacuate them out of the back side on a ladder. We had one injury, minor injury, of smoke inhalation,” Herbster said.
While the flames didn’t spread upstairs, they did cause heavy smoke damage.
Neighbors are just thankful no one was seriously injured.
“It’s very frightening to hear something like that going on in your home area, especially right behind you. As soon as you open your door, you could see it through the windows. Pretty nuts,” Leasure said.
Fire officials said the flames spread to eight units.
The cause is still under investigation.
