OKLAHOMA CITY – More than 40,000 students in Oklahoma City are headed back to class today.
Oklahoma City Public Schools is the first school in the state to head back for the 2014 school year.
For the second year, the school district is using the motto “Here! First day. Every day.” to encourage first day attendance.
Along with being the first day of school for students, it’s the first official school day for Superintendent Rob Neu.
Neu will spend part of his first day riding a bus to school with the kids.
Then, he’ll be making stops through the school district to visit with students to welcome them back to school.
Most other students in the state are still sleeping in today.
A few more metro schools are set to start back up next week.
Deer Creek students go back to school on August 13th, followed by Reno, Mustang, and Yukon on August 14th.
Several other schools start on August 19th: Bethany, Edmond, Mid-Del, Moore, Piedmont and Putnam City.
Norman students have the longest summer break. They head back to class on August 20th.
As students go back to schools, law enforcement says it’s a good time to be aware of speed limits in school zones.
Here are a few helpful reminders:
- Be on the lookout for children who are walking or riding their bike to and from school.
- Stay alert at all time, especially in bad weather.
- Always stop for school buses, obey traffic signs and speed limits through school zones. Otherwise, you could face tickets and fines.
