UPDATE: Charges were officially filed against a man accused of attacking three nurses and a security guard at a local hospital.
District Attorney David Prater filed five charges against Keith Bain after he allegedly stabbed medical professionals at Deaconess Hospital.
Bain is being charged with two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault and battery upon an emergency medical care provider and one count of malicious injury and destruction of property.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Keith Bain went to Deaconess Hospital after he claimed “he was having hallucinations and hearing voices.” The report also says that he told nurses in the emergency room “he was homicidal.”
As he was trying to leave the hospital, Bain allegedly told an emergency room doctor “he was going to leave and he was going to kill him.”
At that point, a security guard stepped in to help the doctor and was stabbed in the neck with a knife by Bain.
The guard was rushed to emergency surgery as three nurses rushed to subdue Bain.
During the struggle, Bain allegedly bit one of the nurses, causing him to bleed.
The affidavit claims he cut another nurse on the left eye, left arm and the left side of his torso.
Bain allegedly also tried to stab and cut another nurse on his stomach.
According to the affidavit, “Bain told me voluntarily that he was looking at [victim’s] jugular and went for it. Mr. Bain told me he could have easily killed [victim,] but he decided to let him live.”
OKLAHOMA CITY – Three nurses and a security guard are recovering after an alleged knife attack in the emergency room of Deaconess Hospital.
According to police, Keith Bain walked in the ER at N.W. 55th and Portland in Oklahoma City, complaining of chest pains.
As hospital staff tried to help the 58-year-old man, the suspect allegedly started to violently assault four workers.
Police say the patient stabbed a security guard in the neck, cut one nurse on face, arm and back, sliced a third nurse’s shirt and bit a fourth nurse on the arm.
“A very scary situation. After he assaulted all of them, he barricaded himself in one of the exam rooms,” said Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow, with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Once in the exam room, police say the suspect, Keith Bain, began smashing everything he could find.
“After he barricaded himself in the room, he began destroying things,” said Wardlow. “He actually pulled a sink away from the wall, causing the room to flood, so he caused significant damage to the hospital.”
Oklahoma City’s tactical unit helped take Bain into custody.
The motive behind the violence is still unclear.
“According to hospital staff, he basically appeared to be out of touch with reality. We don’t know what that was, we don’t know if he was possibly under the influence,” said Wardlow.
The suspect, who lives in Valliant, now faces several criminal charges and remains behind bars at the Oklahoma County Jail.
He is charged with four counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and one charge of malicious injury and destruction of property.
His bond is set for $152,500.
The victims are being treated in the hospital, some have been released.
Deaconess Hospital has released the following statement:
