Man turns himself in after alleged murder, rape, and kidnapping

SULPHUR, Okla. — Justin Smith, 35, allegedly broke into a Sulphur home on W. 13th Street around 7 p.m. Friday. Then, at gunpoint, agents say he forced a woman and 40-year-old Randale Hokett inside into Hokett’s truck.

“The suspect took the two victims to Veterans Lake where he shot the male victim in the head,” Jessica Brown, with Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said.

The OSBI says Smith then drove to the 1200 block of Atoka St., where he parked Hokett’s vehicle with his body still inside.

Neighbors were taken aback by the scene.

“There was a black truck kind of sitting sideways against the road headed down towards the ditch, and there was also a coroner’s pickup there,” Jacob Talley said.

Investigators say Smiths’ crime spree was not over.

“Picked up another vehicle were he took the woman and took her to several different areas over a five hour span of time and raped her,” Brown said.

Agents say Smith eventually dropped the woman off at the Sulphur Police Department and told her to call 911.

Later, Smith drove to Lindsey and turned himself in.

“I believe a family member actually contacted him and convinced him to go into police because they knew we were looking for him and that he would be brought to justice,” Brown said.

Smith is facing several charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and rape.

He is being held in the Garvin County Jail.
