OKLAHOMA CITY – As we near the one year anniversary of the Moore tornado, a local school district is helping raise money for a memorial that will honor the lives of the 24 people that died that day.
The Putnam City Public School District is raising money to help fund the memorial through a dime drive.
Students at Putnam City Schools will bring seven dimes to school on May 20th to remember and honor the seven students that died that day.
Hefner Middle School student Grant Lyda said, “We all mourn together. We all think we should do something and this is something we can do to remember the kids.”
The memorial will be built this year in conjunction with the elementary school.
The memorial is a way to pay tribute to the heroism of those who helped that fateful day and a place for families and friends to remember those who didn’t make it during the devastating Moore tornado May 20, 2013.
Zach Homsey, a student at Hefner Middle School, said, “I can’t imagine a family not being able to have their child come home and this helps them realize that Oklahomans do care and we’re here for them.”
Every dollar donated will go toward a memorial designed by the families of the children who perished.
The benches at the memorial are specially made for those seven students, and will feature some things they loved the most.
Steve Lindley with Putnam City Public Schools said, “We understand that for people to get through what they’re dealing with that there’s a place where there’s some sort of healing that there’s support and they need people to stand with them.”
A place of peace for those lives affected forever, and a symbol of Oklahoma’s perseverance for every student who walks in those doors.
