NORMAN, Okla. – Beginning next year, Sooner fans will have a lot more to cheer about – an upgraded and expanded stadium.
Just hours after the regular football season ended with a win over TCU, construction began.
The first major change was the demolition of the huge scoreboard in the south end zone to prepare for major additions.
The open corner next to the south end zone will be filled with seats, so more fans can cheer on the Sooners from the stands.
“We’re currently on a streak of 104 consecutive sell outs, around 85,000 per game, so we love our fans, and they love us back,” said Kenny Mossman, Assistant Athletic Director for the University of Oklahoma.
In addition to expanded seating, the upgrades will include more bathrooms and more concession stands.
“The people that come to the stadium are going to have an experience unlike anything they’ve seen before,” Mossman said.
This will be the first time the stadium has had a major improvement since the early 2000’s, but university officials said small upgrades have been done periodically since the stadium was built in the 1920’s.
The project is expected to be completed by August of 2016.
