NORMAN, Okla. – OU football player Joe Mixon has been suspended from football related activities.
Although OU officials are not using the term “suspended” they do confirm player Joe Mixon has been told he cannot participate in team activities.
Mixon was asked not to report for team activities Wednesday, the first day OU players were scheduled to report for pre-season practice, with the season opener against Louisiana Tech set to kickoff a month from tonight.
Mixon’s attorney tells us the freshman’s future in Norman isn’t set in stone. He says this doesn’t mean Mixon is kicked off the team. He believes it’s just OU’s policy to keep him off the field until the investigation is complete.
OU fan Bob Cotton says, “He’s 18! My God, his whole life’s ahead of him. He could have been a great one.”
OU fan Teddy Byerly says, “He’s a five-star running back. I’d hate to lose that type of talent.”
We ran into OU’s head coach Bob Stoops at the caravan and we asked him for a comment after suspending Mixon.
Stoops dodged our question says, “How you doing tonight? You guys having a good time? I think they want me to talk in here.”
The fans want the truth to come out, but say they will not stand for any special treatment.
“No, no. If it was me or you, we would all be treated the same,” says Bob Cotton.
OU fan DJ West says, “I hope to God it’s not true but if so he does deserves to be punished for it.”
And if Joe Mixon’s time at OU is over before it really began, the fans think the Sooners still have a chance for greatness this fall.
“Somebody will replace him. It`s a team it`s not an individual,” says Bob Cotton. “One person does not stop the whole Sooner nation.”
Mixon’s suspension comes after reports of assault.
On Monday, the Norman Police Department confirmed that OU running back Joe Mixon, who just turned 18-years-old on Thursday, was involved in an altercation with a 20-year-old woman.
Early Friday morning, officers were called to Pickleman’s Gourmet Cafe, on Campus Corner in Norman, in regards to a fight.
Molitor reportedly said Mixon punched her in the face and broke her nose after he harassed her friends in the restaurant.
The police department’s incident report listed the offense as “aggravated assault and battery,” but says the offender’s motivation is “unknown.”
Mixon was not arrested in connection with this incident.
At this time charges have not been filed related to this incident.
