DUNCAN, Okla. – A brother whose sister was arrested for having an incestuous marriage with her mother says their mother also tried to have a relationship with him.
Patricia Spann, 43, and Misty Spann, 25, were married in March 2016 in Comanche County, court records show.
Police say Patricia is Misty’s biological mother.
Investigators with the Department of Human Services discovered the illegal relationship in August while investigating the children who were inside the Spanns’ home.
Patricia Spann lost custody of Misty and two other children when they were young. They were then adopted by their grandmother.
Patricia and Misty reunited two years ago and “they hit it off,” an arrest affidavit states.
Patricia told officials she didn’t think she was breaking any laws by marrying Misty because her name is no longer listed on her daughter’s birth certificate.
The two women were arrested and booked into the Stephens County Jail on incest charges.
In Oklahoma, incest is a felony, and if convicted, is punishable up to 10 years in prison.
Court records show this isn’t the first time Patricia has married one of her own children.
She also married one of her sons in 2008.
However, court records show that marriage was annulled in March 2010.
Misty’s brother, Cody Spann, told KSWO his siblings are victims of manipulation at the hands of a predator.
“I think she’s worthless she put my sister into this. She forced my sister into this, there’s a lot of people that know it,” Cody Spann told the local news station. “For you to want to put your own daughter through this, what kind of person are you? If that’s what you want that’s on you, but none of us kids want that, and now you got my sister behind bars because of your choices, why don’t you let that sit on you as a mom.”
Duncan investigators agree with Cody.
“Based on what I’ve seen in the investigation I think it is very plausible that the children of Patricia were both manipulated,” Duncan police officer Dustin Smith told KSWO. “That being said they were both legal adults at the time of the marriage, so they had a choice whether to pursue this or not and they chose to get married.”
Cody Spann also told KSWO that while he never had an inappropriate relationship with his mother, she did try.
“She only tried it once and I told her to get lost, I would never be with my biological mom. That is disgusting. I came from that woman,” he said.
Cody said that he was disappointed after Patricia came back into their lives a few years ago.
“We got told we actually had a real mom, so we wanted to know what she was about, the first thing she showed us she was about was trying to get in my brother’s pants,” he told KSWO.
The Duncan man said that he has received an overwhelming amount of negative messages since his family’s story made national headlines.
“I got people on Facebook saying all kinds of comments, telling me my family is incest, we’re nasty, we are better off of this earth,” Cody said.
But Cody still thinks all the blame should be placed on his mother.
“Did she take advantage of the fact that we found her and actually wanted to be a part of her life? Yeah she did. She took big advantage of it. It could have been ‘look we reunited you with your kids, be in your kids’ lives,’ but no, she wants to be with one of her kids. That is sick,” he told KSWO.
Patricia reportedly told investigators that the relationship with her son was not sexual and that she only married him to prevent him from being deployed with the military.
She also told investigators that she married her daughter in hopes of adopting a child, KSWO reports.
