OKLAHOMA CITY – One man is now accused of murdering two people in crimes that are separated by seven years.
Now, Carrecus Hammond is behind bars at the Oklahoma County Jail for allegedly shooting a man to death last year.
The same suspect was convicted of a different murder in 2007.
In 2007, 16-year-old Vinnie Broome was shot three times following an argument at a late night party.
He died as a result of his injuries.
Just days later, police arrested Hammond for the crime.
He was just 14-years-old at the time.
He pleaded guilty and served time behind bars as a juvenile before being released from custody.
However, police claim he killed again last year.
“It was in September of last year that he shot and killed a man near I-240 and Walker, said, MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “Investigators ID’d him as a suspect quickly after it happened but he fled to Florida.”
The shooting at an apartment complex on S. Walker cost Justin Williams his life.
Authorities say he tried to flee the gunfire in his car but quickly crashed and died near I-240.
Using cell phone records, police identified Hammond as a suspect in the murder.
Court records claim, “The last phone call on the victim’s phone was from Carrecus seven minutes prior to the victim being murdered.”
Hammond also allegedly took to Facebook and wrote to a friend “Money was the motive.”
Hammond was taken into custody in Florida before being returned to Oklahoma this week.
Police say the same suspect committing two murders seven years apart doesn’t happen very often.
Knight said, “It is very rare for us to come across somebody who committed a murder, is arrested and charged, served time, is then released and commits another murder before the age of 21.”
Police say the suspect committed his first crime at the age of 10.
In between the murders, he served time for drug and theft related charges.
He’s now being held without bond.
