OKLAHOMA CITY — A metro teen is recovering at home tonight after being hit by a car early Monday morning.
The 15-year-old was badly injured while waiting for the school bus along a dark, rural road. The bus stop is part of the Edmond School District.
Chelsey Isaacs says the driver came out of nowhere and knocked her into a ditch near Northeast 122nd and Ecker Drive. Close to the River Oaks area.
Isaacs says all she saw was headlights. The next thing she knew she was waking up in a ditch.
It was a frightening situation, one her mom says was bound to happen considering the intersection and how fast most drivers in the area are going.
Sharon Sebert, the girl’s mother, said, “I got a call from the bus driver saying her backpack was there, but there was no Chelsey.”
It’s a call no parent wants. Turns out Chelsey had been rushed to the hospital.
Chelsey said, “I saw the headlights and then I woke up on the side of the road.”
Chauncey Moody and his dog Jake live right next to the bus stop. Jake is the one who found Chelsey and got Chauncey to help.
“I heard the dog barking that’s what snapped me out of it,” Chelsey said. “When I tried to get up my back and my neck (hurt), I couldn’t really walk. So, I pretty much crawled.”
Chauncey called 911 and then called Chelsey’s parents who rushed to the hospital.
Chelsey is now back home with a neck brace and a few scrapes. She’s going to be OK.
Her mom and Chauncey both say the intersection is the problem.
Sharon said, “Cars go over this hill flying.”
Chauncey said, “You can’t pull out of that Ecker Drive there because of the speed that trucks and cars come over that hill.”
Chauncey says he is now working with Chelsey’s family and other neighbors, hoping to find a way to slow drivers down.
He said, “My big concern is if we don’t find a way to slow up traffic we’re going to have some kids killed.”
We talked with Edmond schools. They are looking at the bus stop to see if any changes can made on their end to keep students safe.
