Newcastle family’s peaceful creek turns into raging river with record flooding

NEWCASTLE, Okla. – Dozens of homes and businesses were destroyed when a tornado hit their town.

Many others, whose property survived the strong winds, were then hit by record flooding.

The Owens family moved to Newcastle to find peace and quiet in the country.

On Wednesday, a small creek by their home became a raging river.

Flood waters poured into their home as they took shelter underground.

“We were actually coming out and my mom was the last one in there, and the water just kinda started rushing in. We made a huge effort, really quickly get her out of there,” said one resident.

The family invested in a few sandbags for future storms and are thanking their lucky stars.

“Very lucky, very lucky compared to the people three or four miles down the road in Bridge Creek.”
