EDMOND, Okla. — Like most of us, Heisman trophy winner Billy Sims is still coming to grips with the sudden and tragic news.

“I couldn’t believe it. It’s a great loss for the state of Oklahoma,” Sims said.

Billy fondly reflects on BBJ — first, as a shadow to Bob Sr around OU. But he also remember him as  the beloved and respected sportscaster.

The football great was a friend, a fan and a frequent listener of Bobby’s morning radio show.

Sims said, “You listen to him, you start liking him. He’s gonna be hard to fill his shoes, I guarantee.”

Bobby and Billy shared many laughs over the years. And they would often look back on those fabulous fashions of the late 70’s.

“I had this big afro. He was always laughing. I told him I don’t get concussions with this afro. He said you might be right. I know I’m right. When I went to Detroit, I cut my hair. The second game I get a concussion. You know, Bobby had a big afro back in the day. Yeah, the white man afro. He had a lot of hair,” Sims told us.

Big hair. Bigger personality.

For Billy, and all of us who knew and loved BBJ, the void will be tough to fill.

“That is hard to do. Just try to go on with life and knowing he’s in a better place and looking down and still smiling on the state of Oklahoma, for sure.”
