OWASSO — Former Oklahoma State Senator Randy Brogdon announced plans today to run for Governor.
Brogdon said on his website he will file the necessary paperwork and challenge Gov. Mary Fallin for the Republican nomination in the primary election.
He lost the nomination to Gov. Fallin in the 2010 election. Before his gubernatorial race, he served as an Oklahoma State Senator for the 34th district between 2002 and 2011.
He is the first well-known Republican candidate to announce plans to run against Gov. Fallin. On his website, he promised to run on a platform to cut unnecessary spending and small government, saying he feels “morally obligated to lead the fight on behalf of Oklahoma families.”

“Government is too big and too powerful and we all know it,” Brogden wrote. “It spends too much, borrows too much, regulates too much and snoops too much.”
In a statement issued by Governor Fallin’s office, her press secretary said “Governor Fallin is celebrating the birth of our Savior. Mr. Brogdon can use this day to discuss politics. We will not.”
Two Democratic candidates announced their intentions to run for governor earlier this year.
Democratic State Senator Joe Dorman and RJ Harris have filed paperwork with the Oklahoma Ethics Commission to raise money for their gubernatorial campaigns. Both will run as Democrats.
“Rep. Dorman welcomes the opportunity to discuss and debate the issues facing all Oklahomans with Sen. Brogdon as the 2014 gubernatorial campaign unfolds,” Dorman’s office said in a statement.
RJ Harris personally welcomed Brogdon to the race saying, “I look forward to debating the freedom and liberty issues of our time with you when we have each won our respective parties gubernatorial nominations. This will be a great opportunity for voters from both major parties to nominate candidates with Libertarian roots who are each committed to ending tyranny and defending liberty.”
Republican Governor, Mary Fallin, announced her bid for re-election earlier this year.
The 2014 gubernatorial election will be held Nov. 4. Dates for primary elections have not yet been set.
