SHAWNEE, Okla. — A former McLoud elementary teacher and former Shawnee college professor will stand trial for allegedly taking and sharing nude photos of third grade students last year.
Special District Judge Dawson Engle said Monday at a preliminary hearing in the Pottawatomie County courthouse there was probable cause that 48-year-old elementary teacher Kimberly Crain and 65-year-old Gary Doby, who once taught at Oklahoma Baptist University and is also known as “Uncle G,” committed child pornography crimes.
Crain and Doby each face multiple charges including sexual exploitation, possession of juvenile pornography and lewd molestation; 31 counts in all.
Prosecutors said Crain took nude and provocative photos of the students and also had them talk to Doby, who she introduced as “Uncle G,” in Pennsylvania via web cam from her McLoud classroom.
District Attorney Richard Smothermon called nine former students of Crain’s to the witness stand Monday.
Many of their stories were similar.
One 10-year-old girl testified that at Crain’s house last year, her clothes became wet while washing Crain’s car.
She said Crain had her change into underwear in a room Smothermon called “the changing room.”
He said Crain would secretly take nude photos of the girls while they were changing.
The girl also testified she and other girls decorated Crain’s Christmas tree in a bra and panties and were told by Crain not to tell their parents about it.
Smothermon said several times a day in her classroom, Crain would have her students talk to Doby via Skype while more photos were taken.
Another 10-year-old former student testified Doby put the web cam in his mouth and asked her to do the same.
More than one girl testified that Crain had them put their feet up on a table to have their toenails painted.
Smothermon said more pictures of them were secretly taken by Crain at that time.
“They’re horrific,” he said of the allegations. “The crimes these two individuals perpetrated on eight, nine, 10-year-old girls are just horrific.”
He said some girls have had to repeat grades and will be psychologically affected now that they know what was going on.
“It was very difficult for them to come in and sit in front of someone that they trusted and who broke that trust and to talk about the things that happened to them with her (Crain) sitting eight feet away,” Smothermon said. “So I’m very proud of the job they did today.”
Defense attorneys had no comment following the preliminary hearing.
Crain and Doby are facing 20 counts of sexual exploitation and lewd molestation.
Crain is also facing 11 additional counts of possession of juvenile pornography.
Their arraignment date was set for June 27.
Their bond will remain at $1 million.
Smothermon said their trial could begin late fall.
