Update: Flu, strep throat outbreak causes one Oklahoma school to close for a few days

MINCO, Okla. – All public schools in Minco are closed after dozens of students became sick with the flu or strep throat.

The current superintendent says he’s been with the district for over a decade and has never seen a sickness spread this fast.

School officials confirmed about 50 kids are out sick; most of them are elementary students.

“If you have flu-like symptoms, I would definitely get checked,” said Lacy Jenkins.

Jenkins spent her day working while her two middle schoolers are taking advantage of being out of school.

“They’re at home watching TV, just playing; glad school’s out,” said Jenkins.

This mom said canceling class was the right call, helping prevent the sickness from spreading.

“I think it’d be pointless to go to school, and it’s saving a lot of other people from getting sick,” said Jenkins.

“When you miss over 20 percent of your students out of the building, it really makes it difficult to teach,” said Kevin Sims, Minco Public Schools superintendent.

Sims said cleaning crews have been busy sanitizing everything to kill off any germs.

“We’re going through disinfecting the classrooms, all areas actually, with bleach water,” said Sims.

He says he hopes class is back in session on Wednesday.

Jenkins has already talked with her kids about the precautions they need to take to stay healthy.

“When they do get back in school, to cough in their elbow, don’t get in people’s faces,” said Jenkins.

Athletic activities for the schools will go on as scheduled.

Parents in Minco will be notified on Tuesday whether class will be back to normal Wednesday.
