OKLAHOMA CITY — A local family is accusing a school nurse of being violent with their child.
It’s difficult for Tiasha Akins to talk about an incident she says happened to her son.
She says a nurse became aggressive with her son while he was at school.
“You feel helpless because there is nothing that one can do.”
The lawsuit filed states the nurse “grabbed him by the throat, choking him, and then threw him violently against the wall.”
It goes on to say the staffer “was loudly and orally berating” the student.
The little boy also has Down syndrome.
“And then for him not to be able to express himself because of his diagnoses, he’s not able to express himself so you never know what goes on in his mind,” said Akins.
John Stratton, the family’s attorney said someone should be held responsible for students’ safety.
“They definitely have a responsibility not to throttle them or throw them against walls or shake them.”
A district spokesperson says they could not comment on pending litigation. But a quick check on Oklahoma Supreme Court Network shows the school received the complaint and days later filed a motion for dismissal, clearly disputing the allegation.
The incident was captured on video, but is no longer available. Stratton said, “I found out the video was destroyed when I was finally contacted by an outside investigator hired by the school district.”
Akins says she has used this incident as an opportunity to teach her son.
“I explained to him that things like this aren’t supposed to happen and that you try to protect then the best way that you know how.”
NewsChannel 4 was not able to reach the nurse in question for comment. We’re told she no longer works at the school.
