CHICKASHA, Okla. – A Chickasha man allegedly shoves an officer to resist arrest after being accused of brutally beating a friend with a steel folding chair.
Friends and family never thought 31-year-old Roy Smith, or “Big Roy” was capable of violence until Monday.
The victim’s uncle Andrew Guerrero says, “He’s a real nice, gentle guy. I couldn’t believe that even happened. He’s a gentle giant, or was.”
Before Chad Foster could figure out what was going on, he says he was on the ground taking hit after hit from a steel folding chair.
The man allegedly doing the beating was “Big Roy”, his friend since high school.
Guerrero says the friends were doing some work in his at-home body shop when Smith allegedly picked up the chair and started attacking.
But his alleged angry rampage didn’t end there. Smith was less than cooperative once Chickasha Police caught up to him.
Lt. Shannon McClain says, “Tried to question him about what had occurred and Mr. Smith didn’t want to talk to him. He shoved him with both hands into the chest, the officer fell backwards.”
It took a backup officer with a taser to finally take Smith down.
Lt. McClain doesn’t even want to think about what could have happened without that second officer.
“Could be difficult to control an individual by that size that doesn’t want to cooperate,” says McClain. “There’s really no saying what could have occurred.”
But smith’s grandmother, who did not want to speak on camera, says this doesn’t sound like her grandson and Guerrero agrees.
“He was an extremely nice guy I don’t know what happened,” says Guerrero. “Something must have snapped.”
Smith was taken to jail for assault with a deadly weapon, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
