Update: 3-year-old boy killed after being run over in McDonald’s parking lot

OKLAHOMA CITY – A heart breaking story in northwest Oklahoma City.

A young child is dead after he was hit by a car in a McDonald’s parking lot.

It happened at the McDonald’s on Northwest Expressway and Council shortly after 1 p.m.

Capt. Dee Patty, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, says a mother and two children were walking together in the McDonald’s parking lot.

Patty says the 3-year-old boy broke free from his mom’s hand and ran into the parking lot.

At the same time, another driver came around the corner and hit the little boy.

Officials with the Oklahoma City Police Department confirmed the child passed away from their injuries.

The victim’s mother and brother were also hit but suffered only minor injuries.

Police say the driver did not show any signs of being impaired.

The driver had been distracted but so far she has not been arrested.

Police say it appears to be a tragic accident although the building’s design does make it hard to see.

“It is kind of a blind corner and hard to see around,” said Oklahoma City police Capt. Dee Patty. “The driver did not see the family crossing. My heart goes out to the mom because the boy broke free and there was nothing the mom could’ve done. It’s just a tragedy what happened here today.”

Patti Santiago-Brennan, the McDonald’s owner, released the following statement on the accident:

“We are saddened by the tragic incident that happened outside our restaurant today and our thoughts go out to the family during this devastating time. We are cooperating with the local police during their investigation.”

This is a developing story.
