OKLAHOMA CITY – Three people were hospitalized after a Mid-Del City school bus driver hit multiple cars in southeast Oklahoma City.
Fortunately, there were no kids on board, but police say it was still a terrifying scene for a lot of drivers and witnesses.
“Before officers could get on the scene, the school bus had multiple accidents and hit several different cars,” said Lt. Rod Strecker with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Around 8 a.m., police say they started to receive calls about a school bus driving erratically between I-35 and Robinson on S.E. 15th Street.
“The school bus had struck five separate cars in five different accidents,” said Strecker.
After crashing into the cars, police say the bus went up an embankment, striking a railroad bridge.
The school bus driver, Odis Pitts, was found unconscious at the scene, according to authorities.
He was transported to the hospital for his injuries.
Police say the 58-year-old bus driver is facing multiple charges, including one count of DUI/DRUGS, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of leaving the scene of an injury accident.
“There’s nothing good about this at all,” said Zach Frost.
Zach Frost raced to one of the scenes to see if he could help.
Police confirmed at least one person has a serious neck injury and another person may have had their hand amputated in one of the crashes.
Mid-Del schools released the following statement about the incident:
One of our Mid-Del buses was involved in an accident this morning. No students were on the bus at the time of the accident. We are currently investigating the incident at this time. Our thoughts are with the families of those involved in today’s accident.
Officials at Mid-Del Schools told police the driver was not on their bus route. However, they believe the driver was on his way to pick up students.
