OKLAHOMA CITY- Authorities say a man is dead after he allegedly robbed a convenience store and attacked an officer.
Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, police say a man walked into the 7-Eleven store, near N.W. 36th St. and Pennsylvania Ave., and robbed the clerk.
After getting away with an undisclosed amount of money, the alleged suspect, 34-year-old Jeremy Michael Sherbon, ran north to a business parking lot near N.W. 38th St. and Pennsylvania Ave.
That’s where he was confronted by Sgt. Tyrel Hynd, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, who tried to arrest him.
Authorities say Sherbon and Sgt. Hynd were involved in a struggle and Sherbon allegedly got a hold of the officer’s gun.
At that point, he began shooting at the officer.
Fortunately, the officer was not shot and Sherbon continued to run northbound.
However, he didn’t get far before two other officers arrived at the scene.
Officials with the Oklahoma City Police Department say MSgt. Matt Wallace and MSgt. Jeff Fale saw Sherbon shooting at Sgt. Hynd.
When MSgt. Fale tried to get out of his patrol car, Sherbon allegedly turned his attention to him and opened fire.
The bullets hit the patrol car but none of the officers were shot.
The officers fired back at Sherbon, who died at the scene.
“Around this time, a third officer arrived to the scene, both the second and the third officer tried to get this suspect into custody. He continued firing rounds at them. They returned fire, hitting and killing the suspect,” said Capt. Paco Balderrama, with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Authorities say Sgt. Hynd was injured in the fight with Sherbon, but was treated and released from the hospital.
All the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
