OKLAHOMA CITY — An elderly metro man was stabbed while delivering a pizza Saturday night.
It happened at the Chapel Ridge apartment complex near S. E.48th St. and Sooner Rd.
Police are still searching for suspects in the case, while the 77-year-old victim is recovering at a metro hospital.
The victim, Edward Hackett, told police he was attempting to deliver a pizza to an apartment in southeast Oklahoma City Saturday night when he was attacked.
OKC Police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said, “When he arrived, there was no one at the door or no one would answer the door. As he was walking back to his vehicle he was jumped.”
Stabbed in the torso, police said Hackett drove himself back to the Domino’s Pizza just a few blocks away where he works and was then taken to the hospital.
Al, a man who lives in the complex where the attack happened, said, “He could be my grandfather! That don’t make no sense.”
We spoke with another resident at the complex who said a delivery man showed up at his apartment last week with a pizza he didn’t order.
Police said they don’t know if that could be related to the incident over the weekend.
However, they said this type of robbery is not uncommon.
“Cash is obviously the target,” Knight said. “Pizza guys don’t carry a lot of cash and often times there’s a misconception that they do and that’s what makes them an easy target.”
Al said, “I don’t know what’s wrong with these youngsters today. People are just trying to live.”
While police continue to investigate, residents at the complex are hoping the suspects will be caught soon.
Al said, “God gonna punish them for that. I hope he (the victim) makes it and everything be alright.”
We tried to talk with Hackett’s employer and co-workers at Domino’s Pizza.
They tell us they are not allowed to comment and their hearts go out to Hackett.
Hackett remains in the hospital.
He declined an interview request.
Hospital officials said he is in fair condition.
Police said they believe three men jumped him Saturday night.
