OKLAHOMA CITY – Downtown Oklahoma City…
The home of the basketball, Bricktown and …banjos?
The American Banjo Museum has been part of the Oklahoma City family for nearly 6 years after moving here from Guthrie.
This coming September they are adding new additions to their Hall of Fame.
Johnny Baier, executive director told us who they’re looking forward to inducting this year.
“We’ve got Pete Seegar coming in, Steve Martin coming in, Eddy Davis from the Woody Allen jazz band is going to be inducted,” Baier said. “Tim Allan who is a banjo player from Canada- already a member of the hall of fame- getting inducted this time for his part in education, and we’ve got Albert Grover- a guy who did so much to make banjos perfected back in the Jazz age. They’re all going to be inducted in September in the American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame.”
While some might ask why it took banjo greats like Pete Seegar so long to be inducted, it’s because he played a 5-string and the hall of fame was previously reserved for 4-string, tenor players, promoters and instructors.
Last year’s doors opened for the 5-string with induction of banjo legend Earl Scruggs. His son, Randy accepting on his behalf.
“He loved what he was doing, and that was playing the banjo,” Randy Scruggs said about his father.
Being a fan of 5-stringer, Steve Martin, Lucas Ross says he has been ‘pushing’ to get him in the hall-of-fame for years!
“He, more than anyone in today’s culture has made the banjo palatable, acceptable, and hip. And we’re honoring him, not only for being a great banjo player, but for all he’s done to bring the banjo to the general public,” Baier said.
The American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame Ceremony will be held September 11th.
