SWITZERLAND COUNTY, Ind. – A freak accident at a summer camp has claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl.

Investigators tell WAVE that around 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday, a storm moved through the area and lightning struck a healthy tree on the Camp Livingston campgrounds.

The tree then fell onto a cabin with several children and three adults inside it.

Dispatchers learned that one person was injured during the collapse.

When paramedics arrived, they learned that an 11-year-old girl had died from injuries she suffered during the tree collapse.

The girl’s name is not being released, but WKRC says the camper is from Columbus.

“On behalf of Camp Livingston, we share with the heaviest of hearts that we share that an 11-year-old female camper was seriously injured around 3 a.m. when a healthy tree was struck by lightning and fell on a cabin at camp during a severe storm. Emergency services arrived shortly after the accident, but she did not survive her injuries. There were also three adult counselors in the cabin at the time. No other children or staff were injured. The family was notified immediately. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. At this time, we are not releasing the name of the camper, out of respect for the family. We have resources and professionals at camp to help everyone deal with this tragedy. We ask that at this time everyone respect the family and campers privacy as the children and staff deal with this,” a statement from the camp’s vice president read.

Camp Livingston is a Jewish day camp that hosts campers from 7-years-old to 17-years-old.
