VERSAILLES, Ky. – A community in Kentucky is mourning the death of a kindergartner, who was murdered while he slept on Monday morning.

Police say Ronald Exantus allegedly broke into the family’s home, grabbed a large kitchen knife and stabbed 6-year-old Logan Tipton several times.

“We’re all kind of bumping our heads against a wall. It’s mind-boggling,” Lt. Michael Fortney, with the Versailles Police Department, told WLWT. “It’s very, very tragic. It’s a child who had no opportunity to defend himself.”

Exantus also allegedly attacked two of Logan’s sisters, who suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Officers say Logan’s father found Exantus and held him until police arrived.

“We legitimately, at this point, don’t know how this guy got to Versailles,” Fortney said. “We have no correlation, there is no family, no nothing.”

At this point, authorities say they do not know of a motive for the boy’s murder.

Exantus’ attorney says mental competency played a big role in the crime, adding that he was unresponsive when asked questions.

“I have discussed various things with him on two separate occasions this morning and he’s not able to really discuss anything; he’s not here,” Bridget Hofler, Exantus’ attorney, said. “I was not able to communicate with him whatsoever to really determine anything.”

WLEX reports that Exantus is a registered nurse and has no criminal record in Indiana, where he lives.

Exantus was charged with murder and first-degree burglary.
