ALLEN PARK, Mich. – It is a situation that a lot of athletes and celebrities find themselves in these days.
Once the endorsements and playing time ends, many former superstars are not left with much of a fortune.
One former Sooner standout says that is not going to happen to him.
Ryan Broyles, who now plays for the Detroit Lions, signed a contract worth more than $3.6 million.
Three years later, Broyles and his wife have lived on $60,000 a year “give or take” throughout his career.
He says he and his wife drive Mazdas and he still owns his 2005 Chevy Trailblazer from college.
If the rest of his wealth isn’t being spent on fast cars, you may wonder where it is going.
Broyles says he has used the remainder of the money for investments, retirement savings and an account after his football career is over.
“I studied as much as I could,” Broyles told ESPN. “Talked to people wealthier than me, smarter than me. So that definitely helps.”
When he’s not on the field, Broyles is spending his time speaking to students about financial planning in Washington D.C. and in Oklahoma.
