OKLAHOMA CITY – One year ago, Kevin Durant proved to be the best basketball player on the planet.
He won his first MVP award amidst much celebration.
This season’s foot injuries have led to a whole different story.
“He’s missed so much time, it’s like fans are getting used to it,” said Garrett Sullivan, with the Bricktown Brewery.
Sullivan says KD’s absence in the regular season hasn’t hurt business, but if the injury keeps the Thunder out of the playoffs, it will cost the city millions of dollars.
“You can’t deny what Thunder playoffs does for downtown Oklahoma City,” said Sullivan.
Unfortunately, Durant’s lingering foot problems make it unclear how many more times the reigning MVP will actually suit up this season.
“That’s disappointing. It probably hurts their playoff chances for sure,” said Billy Phillips.
“Yeah, it’s disappointing. I don’t think they’ll go far in the playoffs without him,” said Jeff Wellman.
Talking to Thunder fans around Bricktown just minutes after the Thunder ruled Durant out indefinitely, some doubt the Thunder can make the playoffs without one of the league’s best players.
Others still hold out hope for a KD return and deep playoff run.
“I just hope he can get healthy for next year. I don’t want him to get hurt any worse,” said Wellman.
“We’ll just have to make sure other guys pick up the huge gap he’s going to leave,” said Phillips.
“If you’re not holding out hope, you’re not a real fan,” said Sullivan. “There’s a lot of really good talent on the team.”
