AURORA, Colo. — A gunman opened fire on an Aurora movie theater Monday morning, killing 12 and shooting 71.
These are photos from the scene of the shooting, including images of victims being treated, the suspect’s vehicle being searched behind the theater and the suspect’s confiscated riot gear.
There are also images of the suspect’s apartment at 1690 Paris Street in Aurora, which authorities said is booby-trapped with sophisticated explosives.
There are images of federal and local police scaling the walls, attempting to enter the apartment through windows and digging through the dumpster for disposed items that may have been used in the attack or in making the explosives threatening the apartment.
The suspect in this shooting is 24-year-old James E. Holmes of North Aurora, who was found at the back of the theater with three weapons; a handgun, a shotgun and an assault rifle.
He was wearing a riot helmet, a gas mask and a bulletproof vest and told police he was in possession of homemade explosives.
Holmes moved to Denver from San Diego about one year ago to pursue a Ph.D. and studied neurology at the University Colorado-Denver.
He withdrew from the school in June.
