NORMAN, Okla. – As the kids head back to school across Oklahoma, one school district is reminding drivers of steep fines.
The Norman, Okla. Police Department wants drivers to remember to be aware of children traveling by foot, bicycle, school buses, and school zones.
Offices say it’s very important not to pass a school bus from the front or the rear while it is loading or unloading and the lights are flashing.
With three months of no active school zones, officers say drivers should make a conscious effort to watch for them.
According to municipal court, speeding in a school zone carries a flat penalty of $274, no matter the speed.
Improperly passing a school bus carries a fine of $50 to $750, and the alleged violator must appear before a judge.
Tuesday another handful of schools go back to school.
Those include Blanchard, El Reno, Mustang, Tuttle, and Yukon.
Several other schools start on August 19th: Bethany, Edmond, Mid-Del, Moore, Piedmont and Putnam City.
Norman students have the longest summer break. They head back to class on August 20th.
