TECUMSEH, Okla. – Residents in Tecumseh woke up to the sound of a fiery crash Tuesday night.

Investigators say former Shawnee Police Lieutenant Roy Gribble was driving drunk when he crashed into a ditch near 3rd Street and Park.

According to authorities, Gribble refused to take a breathalyzer and other field sobriety tests. Officers say indications like the smell of alcohol, his slurred speech and his inability to stand or walk showed he was clearly drunk. Patrolman said he even became belligerent.

Gribble spent more than 20 years on the Shawnee police force.

“Everybody is disappointed and especially those of us in law enforcement. It hurts all of us and we certainly don’t like to see it, regardless of who you are we will not tolerate it,” said Chief Gary Crosby with Tecumseh Police Department.

Gribble is facing charges for DUI and resisting arrest.  He is currently out on bail.
