MOORE, Okla. – An Oklahoma soldier was honored this week for his remarkable courage and actions following the deadly tornado that ripped through Moore last year.
Oklahoma National Guard Sgt. E.H. Pittman was awarded the Soldier’s Medal on Sunday.
He was given the medal after using his body as a shield while trying to protect others on May 20.
He is now paralyzed from the waist down because of a spinal cord injury he endured during the tornado.
The 30-year-old had recently returned from a deployment in Afghanistan and was working at the 7-Eleven on 4th and Telephone Rd. when the tornado touched down.
Three people died in that store.
Pittman was originally awarded the Oklahoma Star of Valor by Gov. Mary Fallin but the award was just upgraded to the Soldier’s Medal.
