FLORIDA – Two teenage girls in Florida are facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly posting an appalling video to social media.
The two girls are accused of setting a gopher tortoise on fire, then killing it, and posting the video of the entire thing on Facebook.
15-year-old Danielle Dionne and 18-year-old Jennifer Greene were taken into custody Thursday afternoon.
They’re being charged with cruelty to animals, a third degree felony.
They’re also being charged with a misdemeanor for taking, harassing, and killing a gopher tortoise.
Gopher tortoises are listed as a threatened species in Florida.
The girls will face different punishments because of their ages. Deanna Waters, a neighbor, said she doesn’t think that’s right.
“I think they both were there, they both had a part in it, and I think they should get equal punishment,” Waters said.
If convicted, the older teen, Jennifer Greene, could face up to five years in prison.
