OKLAHOMA CITY – Organizers of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon are reminding runners that the course is changing this year with part of the marathon stretching through the south side and a new finish line location.
“As Oklahoma City changes, we’re changing the course to go along with it,” Kari Watkins, executive director for the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, said.
Big changes are ahead for this year’s upcoming Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon on Sunday.
“We’re going to start right in front of the memorial museum as we always do. We’re going to run south on Walker through the Walker bridge over I-40, come up SW 15th and then over the Robinson bridge into what I call a new downtown,” Watkins said.
Organizers are hoping to showcase our growing city, with the run passing construction of the Omni Convention Center and Hotel as well as Scissortail Park.
“It’s a two-year process to change the course. It really is about moving along with our city,” Watkins said.
Also new this year, the finish line will be located at the lawn of Devon Tower and then celebration festivities from there will stretch to the Myriad Gardens.
“Going forward, Scissortail Park, when completed, will be the finish line. We’re very excited about 2020 and our 20th race and the 25th anniversary of the Murrah building bombing to unveil Scissortail Park to all the runners,” Mark Bravo, a spokesperson for the marathon, said. “If you’ve not seen south Oklahoma City, it’s fledgling and it’s changing all the time and then you’ll still encompass all of the great neighborhoods you’re used to in Oklahoma City going north.”
As we do each year, News 4 will be carrying the marathon live beginning at 6 a.m. on Sunday.
