OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma mother is mourning the loss of her only child.
Shaliyah Toombs had not been seen since Sunday and, Wednesday afternoon, Toombs’ mother learned her daughter’s body was found in McClain County.
“I filed a missing person report Sunday night,” said Twyla Taylor.
Taylor said her daughter vanished Sunday morning. The 23-year-old mother of two was eight months pregnant.
“I’ve been trying to call her and get a hold of her ever since, but her phone’s been off, and she hasn’t been on Facebook and she’s normally on Facebook every single day,” Taylor said.
Taylor said a text message from Sunday was the last time they communicated. Because of the investigation, Taylor said she can’t say exactly what the text message said but she describes it as troubling.
“It was disturbing and it was like, she’s in trouble,” Taylor said.
Taylor believes the message was her daughter fearing for her safety.
Toombs was last seen at her southwest side apartment in Oklahoma City.
When News 4 showed up Wednesday, detectives, police and the crime scene unit were also there.
“I’ve been immediately trying to call her back,” Taylor said. “I’ve been calling her phone every day, three or four times a day, all day, it’s still off.”
Just hours after police arrived and our interview with Taylor, she told us a body found Wednesday morning near Purcell was confirmed by an Oklahoma City detective as Toombs’.
Taylor said officials identified her daughter’s body by her tattoos and pregnancy. Police would not confirm that information with us and said they’re waiting on fingerprints.
Now, Taylor is waiting to find out how her only child died.
“If anybody knows anything, please call the police department, Oklahoma City Police Department,” she said.
Toombs’ cause of death is still unknown.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is now handling the investigation.
