OKLAHOMA CITY – A Frontier City roller coaster temporarily shut down while investigators determine what caused the ride to malfunction.
Wednesday afternoon, the Silver Bullet at Frontier City stalled about 100 feet from the ground.
The back half of the cars were able to be evacuated.
However, about eight other passengers were stuck on the ride while crews worked to safely free them.
Fortunately, after about an hour, the riders were rescued.
The Oklahoma Labor Commissioner announced the ride would remain closed while investigators determine what caused the ride to malfunction:
“The Oklahoma Department of Labor has temporarily shut down the Silver Bullet ride pending a thorough investigation as to why the train stalled on the track. Once the investigation is over, Oklahoma Department of Labor inspectors will complete a comprehensive inspection of the ride and assure all safety standards are being met before the ride is operational again. We appreciate Frontier City for executing their emergency plan safely and efficiently, and their commitment to the safety of the public. We also appreciate the quick response and assistance of the Oklahoma City Fire Department.” – Labor Commissioner Melissa McLawhorn Houston.
Frontier City is also conducting a thorough investigation into the reason the ride stalled:
“Frontier City and the Oklahoma Department of Labor are conducting thorough inspections of the Silver Bullet roller coaster after its train stopped on the lift Wednesday evening.
It has been determined that an interruption of power triggered the Silver Bullet’s computerized safety system feature, causing the train to stop mid-cycle. The coaster’s safety system is designed to react in this manner when these circumstances occur.
The Silver Bullet is expected to re-open to the public today pending approval by the Oklahoma Department of Labor.”
The Silver Bullet reopened Thursday around 1:30 p.m.
