NORMAN, Okla. – Norman police opened fire on a man Sunday evening who they say was uncooperative and made threats toward officers.
They were called to a home in the 1700 block of Classen Boulevard just after 5:00 Sunday evening on reports of a man making threats to shoot people.
A witness, who didn’t want to be identified, watched the whole thing unfold from across the street and even took video of it on his cell phone.
“The man was standing in the doorway with a pistol in his hand. And the officers told him several times to drop the weapon, drop the weapon. He didn’t respond at all,” said the witness.
In the video, you can hear police telling the man numerous times to let go of his gun.
“Drop the gun!” yells one officer.
The witness says that went on for several minutes before police opened fire.
“They shot five times. I have no idea how many times he was hit. But he ducked back into the house at that point,” said the witness.
From across the street, he saw police eventually enter the house without any kind of struggle and shortly after, an ambulance pulled up to the house.
Police did not say whether they have ever had contact with this suspect before.
“We have investigators on the scene, crime scene technicians. Right now, we’re working to process and talk to witnesses. Several officers responded to this call so in the next couple of hours we’ll be working to gather all of their statements to figure out exactly what transpired,” said Sarah Jensen with the Norman Police Department.
The man was identified as 47-year-old Mark Riedel, who was rushed to OU Medical Center. He is currently in stable condition.
So far, no charges have been filed in the case.
