OKLAHOMA CITY – The Court of Criminal Appeals scheduled the first execution since the Supreme Court ruling late last month.
The court ordered Richard Glossip to be executed on September 16, 2015.
Glossip was one of three inmates on death row who argued the lethal injection drug midazolam violated the 8th Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment because it fails to generate “a deep, coma like unconsciousness.”
Glossip’s execution date was delayed twice.
He was sentenced to death following his conviction of the 1997 murder of Barry Van Treese.
The execution dates for two other death row inmates are also set.
Benjamin Robert Cole is scheduled to die on Oct. 7, while John Marion Grant’s execution is set for Oct. 28.
